First off, there’s going to be some ’softing at Bro. Darwin’s place Sunday after the birthday party. So make sure to bring some food and drinks because I’m sure we’ll be a little hungry after all the running.
And now for some Labor Day camping info.
As you may know, we went around last Thursday checking for potential campsites that had ‘youth group areas’. There are maybe 7 in the state, and we checked the 4 nearest ones to us. By near, I mean within a 1 hour drive away. These ‘youth group areas’ are located in only state parks, not privately owned ones.
We tried checking private parks years ago and when we asked to rent an area big enough for 60+ people, we always had to take it for 3 nights, or pay an extra fee for each person, or reserve multiple camp sites for each family, etc. Something kinda shady each time we asked.
We’ll look at private parks again this year, because the very first camping trip that we ever did, was actually with a private park and it wasn’t so bad. But then again, maybe we got lucky that time.
So the 4 places we checked out were: Mashomoquet, Pachaug, Gay City, and Cockaponset state park. All of those places are just within an hour drive from Norwich, CT and have these ‘youth areas’.
Now, we decided to visit these parks to see what the places were like after almost falling for one park that had a “great swimming pool” which turned out to be nothing more than a 10 ft wide hole in the ground filled with cloudy water. Eee….
We took pictures and notes of each place and got rid of Cockaponset right off the get-go. The reason why this place never made it was because frankly…it’s poop. The ‘youth areas’ here are little more than patches of land in a forest, near a mosquito infested lake. No thanks. The trails are nice to ride on, yes, but they’re VERY long. To actually get to the youth campsite, one would literally drive 20 minutes around the lake, and then have to walk another 10-15 to get to the patch. The place was too small for our group anyway.
The camping spot:

The next place was right where we had our camping 2 years ago. That’s right folks, Pachaug state park. We always find Pachaug nice because it has ALOT of space. So much that we never had to worry about our volleyball games or our friendship games in the least. Everybody had plenty of space to park, set up tents, and play games all in one area.
The drawback of Pachaug, is that there is no pool, or lake, or anyplace to take a dip if it gets too hot. There is shade though, and it’s pleasant. This will be our ’safety’ site in case we can’t decide on the remaining two.

Next in line is Gay City state park. Now this place wasn’t too shabby at all. It was probably the best kept park we visited all day and it had the amenities we wanted. I would only complain about the camping site itself. It’s in a wooded area, and there isn’t much space to do anything like volleyball.
But that’s not so bad because a short walk down the dirt road is a giant field where we could set up all sortsa games and whatnot. Additionally, there is a nice lake where plenty of swimming can happen. This place has plenty of potential for us.

And then the lakeside:

And last but not the least, Mashomoquet. This place wasn’t too bad either. I would say it rates just below Gay City. It has a nice camping spot, a little small for my taste, but nice nonetheless. We aren’t 100% sure about there being a lake but we’ll take a look again this coming Saturday.
The camp site:

We actually bumped into a few other people camping that day too, hehe. Oh well!
So this coming Saturday, we’re going to head out one more time to check a few other sites, perhaps a private one or two as well.
Then, by this Sunday, we should have an idea where we are going to be going for this Labor Day weekend 2007.
Okay, that’s that for now! I also found plenty of pictures from our Dinosaur Park trip, Chapel cleaning, and Father’s day 2006. I’m just redownloading them now and they should be up by Saturday night.
So let’s hear the thoughts!
